Smith Barracks, Baumholder: BBGS renovates barracks building for American soldiers

The starting signal for the interior work has been given!

After almost complete gutting, the work on the interior fit-out could start in March.

As the 30 flats no longer corresponded to American and German living standards and safety requirements, the US Army Corps of Engineers commissioned BBGS to completely renovate and refurbish the troop accommodation building.

Since the beginning of works in November 2023, doors and walls have been removed, and the rooms became more spacious.

Impressive redesign

Until now, the flats were rather functional and not really attractive. Considering the statics and the strict building regulations, doors and walls are to be moved so that each flat has space for a walk-in wardrobe, a small bathroom and a bright, large living room with a kitchenette.

On each floor, except for the top floor, bullet-proof windows and doors -in accordance with AT/FP safety regulations- will be installed. In Addition, the legally required escape staircase on the outer side wing of the building will be renovated.

On the top floor offices, recreation rooms and storage space are to be created and the windows at the stairwell must fulfil the latest safety standards and not form a danger zone.

During the demolition phase, dedicated space was created for the sprinkler system with an associated water tank. More specifically, the vaulted ceiling above the basement was replaced by a reinforced concrete slab of 60 square meter. This is where the expertise and experience of the BBGS employees proved their worth. In order not to jeopardize the structural integrity of the outer walls during this measure, the risk of collapse was ruled out by carrying out the concrete work in sections. Following this structural intervention, the technology can now be installed and made easily accessible.

New doesn't always have to be new

A nice touch is the preservation of the tiles throughout the corridors, which give the accommodation its typical barracks flair. They will be protected during the renovation work and will shine in their former splendor after the refurbishment.
